Gabriela Dudas - Two Handed Stranded Knitting

"Stranded" refers to the appearance of the yarns on the wrong side of the knitting. Each yarn forms a strand behind stitches in which it is not used. The biggest challenge in stranded knitting is to maintain an appropriate tension in these strands. The method is called "two-handed" because both hands carry a yarn. This combines two traditional ways of holding yarn for knitting - "Continental" and "English". The yarn in the left hand is knitted in the Continental method, and the yarn in the right hand is knitted in the English method. Often Continental yarn management is called"picking" compared to the English "throwing". The key advantage of combining these two methods for stranded knitting is that during knitting, neither yarn needs to be let go in order to knit with the other. Also, the yarns do not get twisted around one another when held this way.

You will learn:

  • How to keep tension when fair isle knitting
  • How to keep yarn from tangling
  • Colour dominance

Wyldespun is a mother and daughter team that creates spindles and Fibre tools from predominantly salvaged wood. Live edges and hand carved details make the tools unique and one of a kind. The nature of the live edge whorl makes for slower revolution in the spindles allowing for more time for either conscious relaxation or time to draft.

Additional kit fee of $90 due to teacher.

The sit and spin kits will be for 3 foot spindles (our most common). The cost for both kits will include spindles, Fibre to practice with as well as a few small surprise goodies. Buy a kit beforehand or bring your own Wyldespun Sit and Spin plus Fibre. A limited number of Wyldespun spindles will be available to loan for the class as well.

Kumihimo is a braiding technique originating from Japan– the name means ‘gathered threads’ in Japanese. 'Kumi' comes from the Japanese word 'kumu', which is gathering or assembling. 'Himo' is cord or string. It is traditionally worked on wooden stool-shaped structures called Marudai, which are beautiful but expensive.

    Gabriela Dudas - Continental Knitting

TIn English-style knitting, the action is throwing the yarn, while in Continental-style knitting, the action is picking the yarn. A lot of people think Continental knitting is simpler and faster. For those of you who know how to knit the English way, this workshop provides you an opportunity to add to your knitting styles. Being able to knit both methods comes in handy when you're working with two colours of yarn in the same row (for stranded work).

Homework will be required with this class: with worsted weight yarn, cast on 100sts, join and knit one round

A River of Yarn - GEMS: Gauge, Ease, Measurements, and Size

Learn about the GEMS, Gauge, Ease, Measurements, and Sizing in the quick paced information workshop.  Tracy will take you through the decision making process of measuring and understanding gauge, and changing gauge for both knitting and crochet.  You will work through changing the yarn for a pattern and come to understand why ease is an important factor in your decisions.  Activities will be completed to help you find the right size and how to take proper body measurements.  And finally you will learn how to compare measurements and adjust the pattern to your liking.  If you enjoy the process of creating and want good results every time, then join us for this workshop.

    Sarah Dawn - Adaptive Knitting

Ever given up on a pattern because you just couldn't do a particular stitch? Having trouble holding the needles but don't want to give up the craft? This class is for you.

Prerequisites would be basic knitting knowledge: cast on, cast off, basic knit and purl stitches and at least knowledge of basic decreases (kt2og, p2tog, etc), as well as very basic pattern reading.

The class will offer an overview of finding a pattern that meets your needs; how to substitute techniques and stitches, finding tutorials that work for you, and a general discussion of accessibility in the world of Fiber Arts - with a focus specifically on questions and concerns brought forward by the students! The second part of the class will be a discussion and demonstration of alternate knitting tools, including a knitting loom. For this, each student is asked to bring a skein of bulky weight or heavier yarn (your choice of fiber content), but a knitting loom and loom picks will be provided for students to try out and take home.

Additional kit fee of $10 due to teacher.
